I need a loan ASAP: what should I do in the first hour?

Sixty minutes, six moves. How to go from 'I need money now' to a sized, documented, single enquiry that a lender can actually act on today.

Quick answer

In the first hour, pin down the real deadline and amount, then ring whoever you owe and ask for more time. Work out the true gap, gather ID and bank statements, and decide which route fits: hardship plan, free No Interest Loan, personal loan, unsecured business funding or a property-secured loan. Then make one accurate enquiry, not five rushed applications. That hour often decides whether money arrives tomorrow or next week.

Key points

  • The first hour is for getting organised, not for applying everywhere
  • A five-minute phone call to the biller can move or remove the deadline
  • Know the true shortfall before you speak to any lender
  • Bank statements and ID are the two documents that unlock speed
  • One accurate enquiry beats a burst of applications on your credit file

“I need a loan ASAP” is usually typed with one hand while the other is holding a final notice. Good news: the next sixty minutes matter more than the next six applications.

Here’s the plan in a sentence. Spend the first hour pinning the real deadline, asking for more time, sizing the gap, grabbing two key documents, choosing the right route and sending one accurate enquiry. Do that and you give a lender everything it needs to move today, instead of chasing you for it tomorrow.

What should I do in the first 20 minutes?

Minutes 0 to 10: stop. Don’t open five lender websites. Grab a notepad or your phone’s notes app and answer four questions.

  1. What exactly is due? The bill, invoice, quote or notice, with its amount.
  2. When is it really due? Not “ASAP” but a date and, ideally, a time. A final notice often has more breathing room than the red ink suggests; a settlement or court date usually doesn’t.
  3. What happens if it’s late? A late fee is very different from a disconnection, a lost job contract or a failed property settlement.
  4. Is it personal or business? That one answer changes which lenders and loan types are even on the table.

Write the answers down. This is your mission brief, and every lender you speak to will ask for it anyway.

Spot the true emergency

Some deadlines are hard walls and some are soft fences. A builder threatening to walk off a renovation, an ATO due date, a property settlement or a supplier who’ll stop deliveries can be walls. A utility bill, a phone bill or a card repayment is often a fence you can lean on with a phone call. Knowing which is which tells you whether you need a loan at all, or just ten minutes on hold.

Can I buy more time before I borrow anything?

Often, yes, and it’s the cheapest money you’ll ever find.

Minutes 10 to 20: call whoever you owe. Energy and water retailers, telcos, banks, councils and the ATO all have ways to arrange more time or a payment plan, especially if you call before the due date rather than after. Our hardship arrangements page has the exact phrases that work.

While you’re there, check two free or low-cost options Moneysmart points people to:

  • No Interest Loans for essentials, if you’re eligible. They can cover things like car repairs, appliances, medical and dental costs or a rental bond, with no interest or fees, and the provider pays the supplier directly.
  • A Centrelink advance payment, available to most Centrelink recipients, with no interest or fees.

If a call wins you a week, you’ve turned a panic loan into a planned one. If it doesn’t, you’ve lost nothing and you know the wall is real.

How do I work out how much to borrow in a hurry?

Minutes 20 to 30: get the number right. Rushed borrowers tend to grab a round, scary figure. That either leaves you short, or has you paying for money that sits there doing nothing.

Run this quick sum:

Step Question Example entry
1 What has to be paid by the deadline? Invoice, notice or quote total
2 What cash can I use without missing rent, wages or groceries? Subtract it
3 Are there costs that come with the loan? Ask how fees are charged
4 What’s the one surprise most likely to show up? Add a modest buffer
5 Can I comfortably repay it on a quiet month? If not, rethink the amount or route

Our shortfall calculator does the maths for you in about a minute. Moneysmart’s personal loan guidance makes the same point in fewer words: only borrow what you can afford to repay, and look at the total cost, not just the headline.

Which documents do I need in the next 15 minutes?

Minutes 30 to 45. Two things unlock speed more than anything else: proof of who you are and proof of what comes in and goes out. Get these first, then the rest.

Grab right now:

  • Current driver licence or passport, front and back if relevant.
  • Complete bank statements for the main account your income or turnover lands in, downloaded as PDFs straight from internet banking. All pages, no edits, no screenshots.

If you’re employed:

  • Your two most recent payslips.

If you run a business or are self-employed:

  • Your ABN, and company details if you trade through a company.
  • Recent BAS, and your latest tax return or financials if they’re handy.
  • Details of any ATO balance or payment plan.

If you own property:

  • The address, a recent rates notice and the name of your current mortgage lender with the approximate balance.

Our interactive document dash ticks these off as you go. Anything you can’t find in 15 minutes, note it and move on. A lender would rather hear “coming tonight” than wait for a perfect pack.

Which route gets me money fastest?

Minutes 45 to 50: choose the route, not the lender. The right type of loan matters more than a famous name. Here’s the honest speed map.

Your situation Likely fastest route How fast it can be What slows it down
Bill can be delayed Hardship arrangement or payment plan Same call Calling after the due date
Small essential, eligible household No Interest Loan Days, provider-dependent Missing paperwork or quote
Personal need, steady income Personal loan Varies by lender and your file Credit history issues, incomplete statements
Trading business, solid turnover Unsecured cash-flow lending, typically $5,000 to $500,000 Same-day funding possible for smaller amounts Messy statements, undisclosed tax debt
Business owner with property Secured loan by first mortgage, second mortgage or caveat, $20,000 to $5,000,000 $20k to $250k possible same day; up to $5m possible in 24 to 48 hours Missing security details, existing lender consents

For more detail on each lane, our loan timeline breakdown goes loan type by loan type, and the speed quiz points you to your quickest lane in a few taps.

Routes to treat with care

Payday loans, stacked buy now pay later accounts and back-to-back pay advances feel fast, but Moneysmart notes their fees add up quickly against small amounts. They can also leave you short again on the next payday. Use them, if at all, with eyes open and a repayment plan.

The scam check

Anyone who approves you before assessing you, or asks for a fee before releasing funds, is not a shortcut. Scamwatch warned in March 2026 about fake loan websites that collect ID and bank logins, then ask for an upfront insurance or establishment payment. Real lenders take fees under the contract, never as a pre-payment.

How do I apply once without wrecking my credit file?

Minutes 50 to 60: send one good enquiry. Not five panicky ones.

Moneysmart explains that your credit report shows how many applications you’ve made, and that your score is calculated partly from that number. A burst of applications in a single afternoon can make the next lender more cautious, not less. It also triples the paperwork and the phone calls.

Make your one enquiry count:

  • Lead with the deadline. Date and time, plus what happens if it’s missed.
  • Give the true amount and say exactly what it covers.
  • Mention the awkward bits up front: defaults, arrears, ATO debt, a recent decline. Surprises cost more time than honesty.
  • Say what documents you have ready and what’s coming later.
  • Keep your phone on loud. The fastest loans are lost to missed callbacks more often than to declines.

Illustrative example: Priya, a café owner, gets a notice at 9am that a key equipment supplier wants paying by Friday. By 10am she’s confirmed the supplier won’t budge, sized the gap with a small buffer, downloaded her business bank statements, and sent one enquiry noting her ATO payment plan. Because the lender didn’t have to chase anything, the conversation that afternoon is about funding, not missing paperwork.

If the pressure is starting to feel bigger than the bill, the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007, weekdays) offers free, confidential financial counselling and doesn’t sell loans. It’s a smart call to make alongside, not instead of, everything above.

Done your hour? See what you could qualify for

You’ve pinned the deadline, tested whether it can move, sized the gap, gathered the paperwork and chosen a lane. That’s exactly the file a lender wants on its desk, and most people never get there.

Here’s what happens when you send it to us:

  • There’s no credit check when you first enquire, so you can see where you stand without a mark on your file.
  • Your details aren’t sprayed across a crowd of lenders. One enquiry, one conversation.
  • A real person reads what you’ve told us and phones you back, ideally while your documents are still open on the screen.
  • Fill it in accurately, deadline and all, so you’re matched to the right option on the first attempt.

Business or personal, big or small, we look at every enquiry and point you to a realistic route. It takes about a minute: check what you could qualify for now, and turn the first hour into money on the way.

Frequently asked questions

What's the fastest loan I can get in Australia?

It depends on what you have going for you. Trading businesses can sometimes get smaller unsecured amounts funded the same day, and property owners may access $20k to $250k the same day through secured business lending. For personal needs, speed depends on the lender, your paperwork and your credit history.

Should I apply to several lenders at once to save time?

Usually it backfires. Each application can be recorded on your credit report, and Moneysmart notes your score is calculated partly from how many you've made. Several lenders also means several sets of paperwork. One well-prepared enquiry tends to land faster.

Can I get a loan ASAP with bad credit?

Possibly. Bad credit narrows the field but doesn't close it, particularly if you have property security or steady business turnover. We consider bad credit and ATO debt case by case. Be upfront about it from the first conversation.

What if I only need a small amount for an essential bill?

Check No Interest Loans first if you're eligible; they can cover essentials like car repairs, appliances or medical costs with no interest or fees. Also ask the biller for a payment plan, and if you're on Centrelink, ask about an advance payment.

How do I know an ASAP loan offer isn't a scam?

A genuine lender assesses you before approving and never asks you to pay a fee upfront to release funds. Check the business on ASIC's professional registers and call it on a number you found yourself. Scamwatch warned in 2026 about fake loan sites asking for upfront insurance fees.

How long does the enquiry take?

About 60 seconds. There's no credit check at that first step, and a real person reviews it and calls you back.
