Quick answer

Start with the provider: ask for an itemised quote, a payment plan or a staged treatment schedule, and check the public system and your health cover. Eligible lower-income households can apply for a no-interest loan of up to $2,000 for medical and dental costs. For bigger bills, a personal loan or home-equity top-up is common, and business owners can sometimes fund it through their business faster.

Key points

  • Get an itemised quote and ask the provider about staged treatment or payment plans
  • No-interest loans can cover medical and dental costs for eligible people
  • Early release of super has strict rules and the ATO calls it a last resort
  • Don't let a clinic rush you into finance you haven't compared

A cracked molar, a specialist who wants a deposit before booking theatre, or a knee reconstruction quote with more zeros than you hoped. Health bills don’t wait for payday.

The quick answer: talk to the provider first, because a payment plan or staged treatment can cost nothing extra. Eligible households can look at a no-interest loan. For larger bills, a personal loan or an equity top-up usually fills the gap, and business owners often have faster options.

How do I find out the real cost before I borrow?

Medical and dental quotes can be slippery. A “from” price at the front desk often grows once the scans are done. Before you borrow, pin it down.

Ask the provider for:

  • an itemised written quote, with Medicare or dental item numbers,
  • what your health fund will pay back, and what’s left as your gap,
  • whether treatment can be staged over several visits so payments are spread out,
  • the deposit needed to book, versus the balance due on the day,
  • whether the public system offers the same treatment, and roughly how long the wait is.

For surgery, remember the bills that arrive separately from the surgeon’s: the anaesthetist, the assistant, the hospital excess and any follow-up physio. Ask the surgeon’s rooms for a list of everyone who’ll invoice you, so you’re not caught short a week after discharge.

Two phone calls (the clinic’s accounts desk and your health fund) often knock a chunk off the number you thought you needed.

What’s the fastest way to pay a medical or dental bill?

Here’s the lie of the land, roughly in the order worth trying.

Can I get a no-interest loan for medical or dental costs?

Possibly. Moneysmart lists medical and dental costs among the essentials that the No Interest Loan Scheme, run by Good Shepherd, can cover.

To qualify you’ll generally need one of these:

  1. income under $70,000 as a single, or under $100,000 with a partner or dependants,
  2. a Health Care Card or Pension Card, or
  3. an experience of family or domestic violence in the last 10 years.

Loans are generally up to $2,000, there are no credit checks, and you need to show you can manage the repayments. The number to call is 13 64 57.

Should I use my super to pay for treatment?

Treat this as a last resort, which is exactly how the ATO describes it.

The rules for releasing super on compassionate grounds for medical treatment are tight. The treatment must:

  • treat a life-threatening illness or injury, or ease acute or chronic pain or an acute or chronic mental illness, and
  • not be readily available through the public health system.

You’ll need reports from two medical practitioners, one a specialist in the relevant field. Cosmetic work is generally ineligible, and the ATO will only approve what’s necessary, not a pricier option you’d prefer.

In October 2025 the ATO and Ahpra issued a joint warning about practitioners and promoters pushing people to tap super for unnecessary or overpriced work. In 2024–25 the ATO rejected 30% of applications in the medical treatment category. If a clinic’s first suggestion is “just use your super”, be wary. What if the bill is big and I own a home or run a business?

Then you have more levers to pull, and some can move quickly.

Homeowners can ask their lender about a redraw or top-up. It’s usually a cheaper form of borrowing, though a formal top-up can take a while to process.

Business owners may be able to use business funding where the business genuinely carries the cost, or borrow against property they own. Property-secured business loans run from $20,000 to $5,000,000, and $20k to $250k can sometimes be funded the same day. Unsecured cash-flow options for trading businesses typically range from $5,000 to $500,000.

Couples can sometimes borrow together, which may help with a larger bill, but both incomes and both sets of debts get assessed, so gather paperwork for each of you.

Everyone else can compare personal loans. Moneysmart’s advice is to compare before you apply, because a flurry of applications can drag down your credit score. More on that at fast personal loans, and for the broader view see emergency loans in Australia.

How can I see if I qualify to cover the bill quickly?

Once you know the real gap, after the health fund and any payment plan, you’re ready.

Send the short enquiry with that figure. There’s no credit check for asking, and a real person looks at what you’ve told us and calls you back. Your details aren’t handed around a queue of lenders, so the only call you get is the useful one.

Give honest figures for your income, existing debts and the treatment cost. That way the option you hear about first is one that genuinely fits, and you can book the appointment instead of re-doing applications.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a loan for dental work or surgery?

Yes. Personal loans are often used for medical and dental bills, and eligible lower-income households can apply for a no-interest loan for these costs. Business owners with property or steady turnover may find business funding moves faster.

Can I use my super to pay for dental work?

Only in limited cases. The ATO requires the treatment to address a life-threatening illness or injury, or to alleviate acute or chronic pain or mental illness, and it must not be readily available in the public system. You need reports from two medical practitioners, and cosmetic work is generally ineligible.

Should I take the finance offered at the clinic?

It might be fine, but compare it first. Ask who the lender is, what fees apply and what happens if you miss a payment, and look at it alongside a payment plan with the provider and other loans.

How fast can I get money for a medical bill?

A provider payment plan can be sorted in one phone call. Loans range from the same day for some business funding to a few days for personal loans, depending on how quickly you can provide income and ID documents.

Will asking about a medical loan affect my credit score?

No. There is no credit check when you first enquire. One is only run later, with your permission, if you decide to apply.
